Money

Money is what you use to buy things.

You can spend money on things you want and on things you need.

  • You might get money from benefits and living allowances.
  • You might have wages from a job.
  • You might get a direct payment. This is when The Community Care and Housing Department gives you money  so that you can buy the help you need.  
  • You might get interest on money you have in the bank.
  • This is when the bank gives you extra money because you have money in the bank.
  • Some people might be given money by parents or carers.

All the money you get  is called your income.

Benefits and living allowances

Benefits can be claimed by anybody.

People with learning difficulties and their carers could be able to get a number of benefits and allowances.

It is important to know what these benefits and entitlements are.

Benefits and entitlements can be difficult to understand. It is a good idea to contact your Welfare to Work Adviser. The Welfare to Work Advisor can tell you whether you can get  a particular benefit or living allowance.

You can look at The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) website (www.dwp.gov.uk).  It  has a lot of information about benefits and services. You can find out about the help that you may be able to get, and how to apply for benefits.

You can telephone the Benefit Enquiry Line for People with Disabilities on 0800 882200 or text phone 0800 243355. These telephone numbers are free.

Direct Payments

A Direct Payment is money from The Community Care and Housing Department given to you so that you can buy the help you need.
Direct Payments give you more choice and control.

Most people with learning difficulties who get help from The Community Care and Housing Department can get a Direct Payment.

Other sources of money

A number of charities, groups and organisations may be able to give you money to help you get something you need.
